Volunteering

Fall 2007 Old Route 2 trail work days:

The big news this Fall is that we are building the next piece of trail that will connect Montpelier east to Plainfield parallel to Rte 2. This is a volunteer-driven project, and we are having VOLUNTEER WORK PARTIES where folks can help actually build the path.

2007 Community Work Parties scheduled for:

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 10 and SUNDAY DECEMBER 2.

You are invited to:

  • Be outside & be active!
  • Learn how to build stone walls.
  • Learn how to build bridges.
  • Help spread gravel on the trail surface.
  • Clip branches back to make the trail more passable.
  • Help us move rock from the roadside down to the worksite.
  • Have fun and make new friends!
Contact us for directions to meeting location.

We are happy to work with people of all ages and experience - so tell all your friends!

We also work with many youth groups, school classes, scout troops and so on, and are happy to meet new teachers/leaders/students - so if you know any folks looking for a good project for their students or youth group, give them our number!

We can teach trail building skills to beginners, or if you are already an experienced builder we can give you a chance to "make your mark" on a project.

Tools will be provided, but please call ahead to see if extras would be helpful. You should plan on bringing water, work gloves, hiking shoes or work boots, a warm layer, a raincoat, and some snacks.

If you are interested in helping out on a volunteer day this Fall, Email Greg Western, or call him at 802-498-0079 x2

National Trails Day
This year's National Trails Day event on the CVT was Saturday, June 3rd, 2006. We will post an article and photos on the event SOON!

Lead a Hike or Bike Ride!

The CVTA wants to get its members out and on the trails! If you are interested in leading a trail walk or bike ride on a particular trail section, contact us and we will work with you to make it happen! Trail outings need to be planned at least 3 weeks in advance so as to allow time to get word out about the event.

Internships:
Over the past eight years, the CVTA has has three student interns, from Lyndon State College, Johnson State College and Boston University. We offer opportunities for independent, sef-motivated, college interns to conduct important, rewarding work in the areas of landowner and title research, land stewardship and conservation. Call or write us

Grantwriting:
Do you have skills writing grants? Do you like trails and want to help the Cross Vermont Trail Association? The CVTA needs people like you!

Photographs, Artwork:
The CVTA is always looking for donations of photographs or artwork of trail scenes or towns along the trail. We are currently developing three trail brochures and are looking for illustrations. We are unable to pay for the artwork or photos, but we will put artist/photo credits for anything we use.

Donated Materials & Skilled Labor:
Do you own or operate equipment such as a bobcat, excavator, or dump truck? Do you have materials such as landscaping stone, crushed gravel, telephone poles, rebar, lumber or used culverts that you would be willing to donate to help make a trail project happen?

Every summer the CVTA has trail projects that are funded by grants, and your donations of labor and/or equipment is needed to make those projects happen. Much of the funding for these projects requires at least 20% local match, which can be covered by locally donated labor and materials.
