In May 2008, CVTA purchased an 11.5-acre parcel of land in East Montpelier which will provide approximately 1/2 mile of trail, as well as a conservation park, and an opportunity for a single family affordable home. Partners in this project included the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board, the Town of East Montpelier, East Montpelier Trails, Inc., Central Vermont Habitat for Humanity, and now Norwich University.
One of the requirements of Norwich University's engineering program is the "Capstone Project." The civil engineering capstone project is undertaken by seniors as multidisciplinary project in their field.
Students are required to perform a project, under faculty supervision, to accepted standards of practice in the engineering field. Students function as a working engineer brainstorming solutions, designing project components, working with clients and regulatory agencies, as well as estimating costs and construction timeline.
- Determine the best alignment for the CVT route on the property.
- Design erosion control plans to repair a washed out gully and an eroding hillside, both located on the property
- Survey the entire property and determine the best grade to climb a hillside while still staying within acceptable limits for shared-use bicycle paths.
- Research and determine permitting requirements for trail layout; including environmental, local/zoning, etc.

The CVTA is applying to the Lake Champlain Basin Program and the VT Watershed Grants Program for funding to implement the designs created by Norwich's students this Fall and Winter. We are very excited to be teaming up on this project! Check back for more updates on this project as they develop.
